2017: A great year for Victorian Gymnastics
2017 has been a fantastic year for Gymnastics in Victoria.
We notched up a new record gymnastic participant membership of 59,107 athletes which is up by 12% from the 2016 membership number.
We are proud that of this membership number 12,499 participants are from underrepresented groups - an area that Gymnastics Victoria continue to make a key focus of across our organisation. In 2017 our work in this space was highlighted with the Australian Sports Commission Play By the Rules Award and the Victorian Disability Award for Creating Excellence in Inclusive Communities.
We end the year with 129 Gymnastics clubs across the state operating across 150 venues with Gymnastics happening in all corners of Victoria from Portland to Mildura, to Mallacoota and Albury Wodonga. At the start of the year, 80 club representatives attended our Club Conference and in the middle of the year Gymnastics Victoria hosted the National Leading Clubs Conference with 55 clubs represented and the Aspiring Clubs Conference with 13 clubs in attendance.
We continue to kick goals in the education space with our total number of coaches in Victoria now close to 2000 with over 500 qualified judges. We are also proud to have run multiple coaching courses in every region in Victoria with 134 courses delivered in total. Our presenter workforce has also grown by massive 62%, with regional presenters making up 34% of our new presenters. We also hosted our Coach Conference in January with over 220 people in attendance.
Our overall event participation number was up by 27% on the 2016 figure. Our June Victorian Championships recorded a 32% increase in athletes while participant numbers were up by a massive 131% in our August Victorian Championships due to the re-inclusion of Aerobics. Our November Gymnastics Championships also recorded growth with 78% more participants in Junior Victorian Championships. Rounding out our events calendar both the Family Ball and Awards Night in February and the Women in Sport Breakfast in October sold out.
A huge thank you to everyone in the Gymnastics community for your ongoing support and making our sport so great. We look forward to a big 2018!
