January Hero of the Month - Alicia West

Gymnastics Victoria are proud of having so many committed coaches, judges, volunteers and administrators across the State. We will be featuring Hero of the Month profiles – you can nominate a coach, judge, volunteer or administrator to be featured by clicking here.

At 18 years old, Alicia West has been a regular character of Balwyn Gymnastics Club for well over a decade. Beginning as a young gymnast and dancer at the Balwyn Leisure Centre, Alicia progressed from participating in the sport to becoming a volunteer assistant coach and is now a senior coach at the club. Alicia still loves participating and trains 5 hours per week in the Gymstar Squad program, where she is well known for her powerful and striking floor routines.

Alicia should be commended for her dedication to her coaching role at Balwyn Gymnastics Club throughout 2018, whilst juggling her year 12 VCE studies. Throughout the year, Alicia became a 'jack of all trades' coaching in almost every program from pre-gym through to the Gymstar squad. In her spare time, Alicia could be found assisting the team leader to organise and prepare for the club's largest fundraising events, such as the Club Championships and Display Day.

Outside of her own Gymnastics community, Alicia supported Gymnastics Victoria in the inclusion space by volunteering her time and talent at numerous community activations, including the Variety Children's Charity Christmas Party and the Disability Sport and Recreation Festival.

In the past month, Alicia has now enthusiastically taken on the role of Pre-gym lesson planning.

When she's not busy mentoring the next generation of young gymnasts and coaches, Alicia is enjoying her first year out of secondary school and hopes to pursue a career in Primary Education.

Keep up the great work Alicia!
