Victorians claim Gold in Rhythmic Continental Championships

The Oceania Continental Championships between Australia and New Zealand kicked off this week in the Gold Coast. It was the first of three times the countries will compete, with Rhythmic being the first event.

The Australian Rhythmic team featured two Victorian Gymnasts; Ashari Gill and Alexandra Kiroi-Bogatyreva who were joined by Queensland Gymnast, Lidiia Iakovleva.

The Rhythmic competition was made up of four apparatus: Hoop, Ball, Clubs and Ribbon. Alex first undertook the Hoop component to near perfection, followed by a strong Ball routine from Ashari and a closing statement Ribbon routine from Lidiia.

Final scores are comprised of the top two scores from each apparatus. Australia finished with a score of 220.000 to New Zealand’s 182.850.

On top of their continental success, it has been a busy week for Ashari and Alexandra at the Australian National Championships. Alex has clinched two Gold, one Silver and one Bronze medal for Rhythmic performances while Ashari has collected one Bronze and one Silver herself.

Credit is also  due for the girls’ coaches; Alicia Regula and Kateryna Logachova (Prahran Rhythmic Gymnastics Specialist Centre) who have worked closely alongside the two athletes.

Later this week will see Men’s and Women’s Artistic compete to round out the three events that make up the Oceania Continental Championships.
